asked the Minister for Finance when it is likely that the arterial drainage of the Boyne will commence; and what is the present position regarding it.

Steady progress has been maintained in the design and preparation of a scheme for the Boyne. The formulation of an efficient arterial drainage scheme for this river presents many problems because of the water-power, fishery and navigation interests which are involved, including the effects on the port at Drogheda.

I have already stated that it is hoped to reach the works stage in 1967. We are striving to achieve that but, having regard to the many snags which can crop up in a project of this magnitude, I cannot commit myself to any definite promise.

It is further back than before you answered the question. It was guaranteed for 1967 the last time, according to a question some months ago.

No, I said it was hoped; it would never be guaranteed.
