Vol. 214 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Taxation of Public Service Vehicles.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware of the very considerable difference which exists between the rates of taxation paid on public service vehicles in this State and in Northern Ireland; and that public service vehicles owners here have to pay a taxation rate far in excess of that payable in Northern Ireland; and if he will take steps to reduce the taxation rate here so as to reduce the burden on the operators of local bus services and other similar services.

I am aware of the differences referred to by the Deputy. I am also aware, however, of the pressing need of road authorities for financial assistance to enable them to maintain and to improve the public road system so as to render it fit for modern traffic. This assistance is made available mainly from the Road Fund which is fed by the proceeds of the duties levied on all classes of mechanically propelled vehicles including public service vehicles. In the light of these considerations I do not propose to proceed as suggested by the Deputy.
