Vol. 214 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recognition of Gun Clubs.

52.

asked the Minister for Lands if it is his intention in relation to game that the gun clubs should be given recognition equal to that accorded to landowners.

Official recognition of gun clubs and similar game preservation associations is provided for in section 15 of the Game Preservation Act, 1930. Subsection (2) of the section requires the recognised association or club to have the written consent of the occupier for the reservation of the lands.

Does this not mean, in fact, that the landowner is to get only the same recognition as the member of a gun club? Does the Minister ever hope to have success in game propagation and preservation while he insists that people with no land should have the same rights as the landowner, and without the co-operation of the landowner?

I have not insisted, nor have I any function in insisting anywhere in this connection. The Deputy asked me if it is my function in relation to game that the gun clubs should be given recognition equal to that accorded to landowners. I officially recognise gun clubs under the Game Preservation Act, 1930. Under that law, to secure recognition, their application must have the written consent of the occupier who generally is the owner of the lands. I do not know what the Deputy is trying to get at.
