Vol. 214 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin School Classes.

63.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Education the number of national school classes in Dublin city and county in which the number of pupils on the roll exceeds (a) fifty and (b) forty.

64.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Education the names of the national schools in Dublin city and county where there are classes with more than fifty enrolled pupils, and if he will state the steps being taken to reduce the number of pupils in such classes to fifty or less.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 63 and 64 together.

As I informed the Deputy on 3rd June last, I had a complete survey carried out in January/February, 1964, of all the classes in the Dublin area in which there were more than 50 pupils. As a result of re-organisation of classes in individual schools and the better distribution of pupils as between schools in each locality the majority of such classes were eliminated. The remainder were with very limited exceptions catered for by the provision of 112 prefabricated buildings and 104 additional teachers. The exceptions were by and large cases where representations were made that children of the one family should, as far as possible, be accommodated in the same national school. It would not be proper for me to give the names of the schools concerned.

The information which the Deputy seeks in relation to classes over 40 is not available in my Department. The collecting of this information will form the subject of a future survey.
