Vol. 214 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reclassification of Roads.

26.

asked the Minister for Local Government what progress has been made on the reclassification of roads.

Certain country-wide traffic censuses by way of visual counts have already been taken in connection with the question of a reclassification of the public road system, but further counts, analyses and studies still remain to be made. The task of reclassification is a highly complex and time-consuming undertaking and I am concentrating on the objective of having it done in as up-to-date, accurate and comprehensive a manner as will enable us to be guided by the results for a long time.

Has the Minister worked out any yardstick for main roads, bearing in mind the present volume of traffic? He is not using the same yardstick used to decide what was a main road 30 years ago?

I have not got the yardstick of those days and cannot, therefore, make a comparison. I can assure the Deputy that the yardstick used will be up to date.
