Vol. 214 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Driving Test Centre.

27.

asked the Minister for Local Government what staff is employed at the office of the Driving Test Centre, Galway; the hours for public opening of the office; the number of callers at that office since 1st January, 1965, to date; and the rent payable for that office per annum.

The driving test centres which have been established in a large number of towns throughout the country are not public enquiry offices. They serve primarily as places where a candidate for the test may meet the driver tester on the basis of an appointment previously made. Bearing this in mind, the answers to the Deputy's questions are:

1. No staff is constantly employed at the Galway Test Centre;

2. The centre is open during periods in respect of which appointments for tests have been made;

3. The number of tests carried out from the Galway centre since 1st January 1965, is 35.

In accordance with normal practice, the premises have been provided by the Office of Public Works and the rent is payable by that office.

Is the Minister not prepared to say what the rent payable on this office is?

I have not got it here.

Would the Minister not consider it in the public interest, instead of wasting the public money, to have this office that does not exist in the county council licensing office?

That is a separate question.

I think it arises out of the fact that the Minister is not prepared to give the answer.

I do not know what the Deputy wants to find out.

We will have to allow for the Minister's dullness.
