Vol. 214 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Grand Canal Sewage.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether, in regard to the proposal to run a main sewer down the Grand Canal, he will examine the practicability of utilising the sewage as a fertiliser; and if he can make any statement on this proposal.

There is no proposal before me for running a main sewer down the Grand Canal. The proposal made by Dublin Corporation in this matter was referred back to the Corporation for reconsideration as regards the technical basis of the scheme itself and its general planning implications and for investigation of possible alternative solutions. The practicability of utilising treated sewage for agricultural purposes was considered by a committee set up in 1947 by the Minister for Local Government. This committee reported that sewage sludge recovered from sewage works has a certain manurial value but that the cost of its production in useful form from Dublin sewage would be out of proportion to its value as a fertiliser.

I take it there is no implication in this question of the closing of the Grand Canal?

I have no idea what is implied in the question. I am not answerable for that.

It looks very much as if Deputy Lemass is anxious to close the canal.
