Vol. 214 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Galway Land Division.

36.

asked the Minister for Lands what proposals for land division he has to meet the needs of the people of Rahoon, Galway and Corrandulla and Claregalway, County Galway.

Whilst the Land Commission at present have no lands in their possession in Rahoon district, proceedings are in progress for resumption of 35 acres in the locality generally for relief of congestion.

In Corrandulla area, the Land Commission have already succeeded in acquiring a number of properties comprising about 600 acres, while further areas aggregating approximately 260 acres, apart from commonage shares, have come into their possession as a result of the migration of 11 tenants during the past few years. It is hoped to dispose of a substantial portion of these lands, involving the rearrangement of some 33 fragmented holdings, during the current allotment season. In addition, about 90 acres are the subject of acquisition proceedings and the possibility of migrating further tenants from this area is being examined.

In Claregalway district, the migration of five tenants in recent years has resulted in the rearrangement of 21 holdings by the Land Commission. It is envisaged that an area of 46 acres, at present on hands, will be utilised to rearrange eight further holdings this year. Efforts are continuing to transfer additional migrants from this locality also, with a view to augmenting the pool of land available for land settlement.

Will all these allottees be entitled to 45 acres each?

I should not like to answer the Deputy on that, unless he wishes to put down a specific question on the matter.

Is that not the policy?

It is the policy at which the Government are aiming.

It is not being carried out.

The way in which the Deputy is putting the case is rather confusing.

In East Galway, you tried to confuse the people.
