Vol. 214 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rathmines Post Office Facilities.

38.

Mr. Ryan

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that persons requiring postal services at Rathmines Road Upper Post Office, Dublin on days when social welfare payments are being made have frequently to wait for long periods before getting service; and if he will have steps taken to ensure an adequate staff to provide all required postal services without delay.

The staff provided at Rathmines Road Upper Post Office is adequate to deal, without undue delay, with the volume of business normally transacted there.

Mr. Ryan

Has the Minister been made aware of an instance in January when a lady, intending to post a letter and a paper to Australia, was sold a 5d stamp at one counter and the attendant refused to weigh the newspaper on a scale three feet away and required this member of the public to join a long queue, with the result that she did not reach the adjoining counter until some 12 minutes later, when the parcel was put on the weighing scale that was three feet from the attendant who had refused to put it there? Does the Minister think that is a reasonable service to offer the general public in an office in Rathmines?

The Deputy should have given me notice of that particular instance on that particular day last January.

Mr. Ryan

I am asking the Minister if the Department made him aware of it, as his Department are aware of it because they received a complaint.

The Deputy is not concerned about it.

Let the Minister answer. Do not try to help.

Mr. Ryan

If the Minister tries to look after health, instead of looking after other matters, we may get somewhere.
