Vol. 214 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recruitment of State Card Punchers.

7. Mr. Ryan asked the Minister for Finance the number of card punchers in State employment in respect of whom the Civil Service Commissioners have made orders under the Civil Service Commissioners Act, 1956; and the reason why such persons have not been recruited in the normal way to the Civil Service.

The total number of card punchers in State employment on 15 February, 1965, in respect of whom the Civil Service Commissioners have made Orders under section 5 of the Civil Service Commissioners Act, 1956 or who were recruited under the First Schedule to that Act was 114. The officers were recruited in this manner because of the uncertainty as to what extent the grade of card puncher would remain a permanent feature of the Civil Service structure, the irregular pattern of recruitment to the grade and the need to fill posts at short notice.
