Vol. 214 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Malahide (Dublin) Building Site.

24.

asked the Minister for Local Government the precise reasons why he refused to confirm that part of a Compulsory Purchase Order made by the Dublin County Council on 1st May, 1964, relating to an urgently needed building site at Malahide, County Dublin.

The site referred to comprises an area of almost 10 acres of a holding with a total area of 39 acres. The owners objected to the acquisition of this land on the grounds that it was the best land on the farm, that its acquisition would result in the severence of a further area of 3½ acres of high quality agricultural land from the rest of the farm and would make the holding completely uneconomic and inadequate to support the persons who were dependent on the farm for their livelihood and support.

At the public local inquiry held to consider the order, the objectors put forward detailed evidence in support of their objections and, having considered this evidence and the report of the inspector who held the inquiry, I decided that it would impose undue hardship on the objectors if the Compulsory Purchase Order were to be confirmed in respect of this site.

While accepting the Minister's view in that matter, may I ask the Minister would he consider, if it is within his province, making strong representations to the local authority here in regard to the situation in Malahide, which is very bad, one of the worst in the country in so far as housing is concerned, and would he urge upon them as firmly as he can the need to get a site in another place where they would impose no hardship on a big landlord in the area, to provide houses for the people who badly need them?

We have been already in touch or, if not, will be very shortly, with the council on this matter. We are well aware of the situation in Malahide.
