Vol. 214 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Testing of Medical Preparations.

16.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Health the number of samples tested, and when tested, in respect of the following substances on sale in this State during the past year: sera, toxins, toxoids, antitoxins, antigens, glandular extracts and antibiotic preparations.

Practically all substances of the types listed in the question come within the scope of the Therapeutic Substances Act, 1932 and the Regulations made thereunder. Stringent requirements for substances imported for sale, or manufactured in the State for sale, are specified in that legislation. The requirements include the furnishing for examination by my Department, of information regarding methods of manufacture, and of tests applied at various stages of manufacture, and the submission of lists of expert staff concerned and information regarding containers. Import and manufacturing licences are not granted until full information has been submitted and considered.

Four samples of antibiotic preparations, not covered by the Therapeutic Substances code, were sent for testing in the past year. These items were sent for testing on 11th August, 1964, 27th November, 1964, and 15th February, 1965.

Can the Minister state with what results were the substances tested on the occasions described?

In two cases the samples were found to conform with the specification. In one case the first sample did not and the second did, and in the fourth case the result has not yet been received.
