Vol. 214 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Reciprocal Insurance Benefit Agreement.

59.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether as a result of the conclusion of a reciprocal agreement with Great Britain Irish workers in England who return to this country now receive a lower rate of benefit than they formerly did, although they have continued to pay the British rate of contribution.

A reciprocal agreement covering benefits for sickness, maternity and unemployment was made with Great Britain on the 29th March, 1960 and came into operation on 2nd May, 1960. That agreement replaced and extended a previous agreement made in January, 1953. As under the 1953 and previous agreements, Irish workers under the present agreement who have been insured in Great Britain and who, on return here, qualify for benefit, are paid at the same rates as other workers insured under the Social Welfare Acts.
