Vol. 214 No. 9

Committee on Finance. - Vote 2—Houses of the Oireachtas.

I move:

That a supplementary sum not exceeding £93,000 be granted to defray the charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending on the 31st day of March, 1965, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Houses of the Oireachtas, including certain Grants-in-Aid.

I should say that this is all due to increased allowances for Deputies and Senators, and increased remuneration for members of the staff.

It is all part of the last wage round?

Would the Minister say if there is any proposal in regard to something which is referred to briefly, that is, the question of the ushers who have long service and who are not getting credit for that service? Some of them will be retiring this year and some next year. They have given their life's service to the State and it is most unfair that they should not get the credit for that service which they would get if they were in any other branch of the Government Services. If the Minister wants particulars, I shall be glad to give them to him.

We did bring in a Bill and my impression is that we improved the position of the ushers.

Yes, but unfortunately they were not all given credit for their service. That was most unfair to those people who could do nothing about it at the time. The Minister should have another look at the position and try to be more generous.

I should like to find out what the position is.

Vote put and agreed to.
