Vol. 214 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Edmund Ignatius Rice Chapel.

5.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is prepared to have the former Edmund Ignatius Rice chapel at Hennessy's Road, Waterford scheduled as a national monument.

I am advised that this chapel is owned by the Waterford Corporation and the matter is one for consideration by them in the first instance.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary tell me if the Board of Works would be prepared to come in in an advisory capacity, as I believe they can, under section 15 of the National Monuments Act, 1930?

If the Corporation decide to preserve the chapel under the section mentioned by the Deputy the Commissioners of Public Works would be very happy to advise them on the matter.

If the Corporation were not prepared to do so—I have no doubt they will—and if a group of private individuals collected a fund for that purpose, would the Parliamentary Secretary say if the Board of Works would be prepared to come in in an advisory capacity, to give advice and direction?

Yes, we would be delighted to do so.

I am very grateful to the Parliamentary Secretary. His conduct should be an example for the Minister for Transport and Power.
