Vol. 214 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kilkenny Broiler Industry.

28.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if with reference to a broiler business proposed to be set up in Kilkenny for producing ten to twelve million birds per annum, all of which will be exported, he will give an assurance that he will grant it the same concessions of unrestricted imports of feeding stuffs as has now been granted to the Bandon project.

If a soundly based broiler project, the total production of which will be exported, is put forward, the concession of unrestricted imports of feeding grains will be granted.

What kind of information would be required before such a project could be put forward?

We would require all the usual details that would accompany any such application, but I should mention to the Deputy that there would be a number of bodies involved in the consideration of any such project. My Department would be only one of these. From our point of view, we would be mainly concerned with the viability of the project from the economic point of view and the matter of its satisfying our veterinary requirements and agricultural considerations of that sort. The financial structure of the project would be a matter for the other bodies concerned.
