Vol. 215 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Improvement of Health Services.

20.

asked the Minister for Health when he expects to introduce legislation incorporating the improvements to the health services forecast by the Taoiseach during the general election campaign.

Mr. O'Malley

I have directed my Department to proceed urgently to complete an examination of the practical details of the proposed improvements referred to by the Taoiseach. I am, also, having a comprehensive review made of the entire health services. I will make an announcement as soon as that examination and review are completed.

I am sure the Minister is aware of the universal dissatisfaction experienced by our people with regard to the inadequacies of the present Health Act which denies so many of them the hospitalisation, specialist services, choice of doctor and the many other things to which they aspire. Will the Minister give the House and the country an assurance that he will bring about a radical change as a matter of great urgency?

Mr. O'Malley

These matters are being examined.

For some years.

Mr. O'Malley

I hope to make a statement as soon as possible and to satisfy the Deputy.

He is clearing up the mess left by his predecessor and that will take some time.

I suppose we shall have another commission.

We will not.

Not as far as I am concerned.
