Vol. 215 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ireland's Membership of EEC.

1.

asked the Taoiseach what is the present position with regard to this country's application for membership of the European Economic Community; and whether any progress has been made in recent months.

There have been no developments regarding Ireland's application for membership of the European Economic Community since I replied to a similar Question in this House on the 18th November last. We continue to maintain close touch with the Community but it is unlikely that negotiations on our application will be resumed in the near future.

During the Budget debate I intend to deal more fully with our external trading arrangements.

Has any consideration been given to a trade agreement with the Community as distinct from membership until the application for membership is pursued?

Yes, but that would not arise yet.

The Taoiseach still believes we shall be in by 1970? That is a fair question. He said that many times.

I think it is very likely.
