Vol. 215 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio Éireann Reception in Waterford.

39.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that reception from Radio Éireann is most unsatisfactory in the Waterford and Tramore areas; and if he will take steps to have this remedied.

I am aware that listeners in many parts of the country have difficulty in receiving Radio Éireann programmes, particularly after dark, because of interference caused by foreign stations. For some time past my Department has been in correspondence with the administrations whose stations have been causing interference to the Athlone transmissions. As a result there has already been some decrease in the level of the interference and I am hopeful that there will be a further and more substantial improvement within the next few months.

As was said in reply to previous questions of this kind, the establishment of a national VHF service, which is at present under way, should result in better reception of the Radio Éireann programmes throughout the country.
