Vol. 215 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Car Registration Numbers.

16.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider as a revenue-raising item the desirability of allowing persons who wish to do so to retain a motor car registration number by payment of a fee, similar to the facility which is available to residents of Great Britain.

The purpose of the registration system is to facilitate the identification of vehicles for road traffic and motor tax purposes. If two or more vehicles have the same number, this purpose is defeated.

I am accordingly not prepared to alter the Article in the 1958 Regulations which provides that an identification mark shall attach to a vehicle until it is broken up, destroyed or sent permanently out of the State.
