Vol. 215 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prefabricated Houses.

12.

asked the Minister for Local Government if in view of the acute housing shortage in Dublin he will give consideration to the question of providing prefabricated houses for those people who cannot hope under present regulations to be housed within the next few years; if he has examined the cost of providing prefabricated houses; and, if so, at what cost could each be provided.

I would refer the Deputy to my recent statement introducing the Estimates for my Department, in which I indicated the steps which I have taken for the examination and introduction of new building methods and techniques, including the 3,000 dwelling project at Ballymun. This project, together with the Corporation's expanding output of dwellings should bring about a substantial improvement in the overall housing situation in the city in the near future.

I have also approved of the use of prefabricated chalet type dwellings by the corporation for emergency rehousing of households of not more than two persons, at a cost of from £900 to £1,000 each.
