Vol. 215 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Multiple Births: Increased Social Welfare Benefits.

21.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will introduce proposals to amend the Social Welfare Acts so that larger grants and benefits than usual will be payable where multiple births occur in order to assist the family concerned to meet the considerable additional expense resulting from such births; and if he will amend present legislation to provide that where local authorities provide relief in such cases it will be augmented on a pound for pound basis from the Exchequer.

A Bill providing for a number of improvements in existing social welfare schemes, including those mentioned in the Budget, will shortly be introduced. The matters mentioned by the Deputy are under consideration, but I am not in a position to say whether provision for them will be included in the proposed legislation.
