Vol. 215 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Servants: Service as Teachers.

4.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that a certain number of civil servants who had previous service as national teachers have not their years of service as teachers taken into consideration for pension purposes; and if he will take steps to have this service taken into consideration when calculating pensions.

A national teacher who is appointed to a post as an inspector or organiser in the Department of Education is allowed to reckon his teaching service for superannuation on final retirement. Occassionally a national teacher competes for a Civil Service post in which teaching experience is not needed. In such a case, reckoning the teaching service would not be warranted.
