Vol. 215 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post-Primary Scholarships.

30.

asked the Minister for Education if, further to a reply of 29th April regarding post-primary education loans, he will give details of the further financial assistance which he proposes to render to local authorities to enable the number of scholarships to be very substantially increased; and when this assistance will be given.

I hope to be in a position to introduce shortly an amendment to the Local Authorities (Education Scholarships) (Amendment) Act, 1961, which will have the effect of at least doubling the amount of money at present allocated by local authorities for scholarships.

When the Minister is considering this matter of money for scholarships, will he bear in mind that there is no agricultural scholarship from the Dublin Corporation at the present time and that this is something that is resented by a considerable number of people whose families have farms and who may wish to return to the country?

Would the Minister further consider bringing in a regulation to provide that only a similar amount to that spent on secondary school scholarships may be spent on university scholarships by the local authorities?

I am not sure if the points raised by the Deputies can be considered in conjunction with the amendment I have mentioned here. However, I am carrying out a general revision of the whole question of scholarships and I shall bear those points in mind.
