Vol. 215 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing for Army Personnel.

36.

asked the Minister for Defence if it is the intention of his Department to build new houses for Army personnel and to improve the present houses at Renmore Military Barracks, Galway.

A programme for the erection of new married quarters for soldiers at the centres where the needs were greatest was drawn up some years ago and has been actively pursued since. Housing schemes totalling 170 houses have already been completed at Dublin, the Curragh, Athlone, Cork and Naas and provision is made in the Vote for Defence for the current year for a scheme of 20 houses in Athlone to replace old type quarters and for a small scheme of 6 houses in Limerick. It cannot yet be determined when or where a further quota of new houses will be erected but the needs of Galway will receive full consideration in the light of the circumstances obtaining when a decision is being taken in relation to the location of the next housing scheme.

There are no current proposals for improvements to the existing soldiers' married quarters at Galway, which were provided with individual sanitary and bathing facilities some years ago.
