Vol. 215 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laois Coal Mines.

40.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that three coal mines in the Dounane area of Laois have closed down; and that as a result there is considerable unemployment and great hardship; and whether he will take steps to ensure that these mines are reopened or that some form of alternative employment is provided in the district.

I understand that three coal mines in the Dounane area of Laois, which between them formerly afforded employment to an average of 120 men, closed down recently because of difficulty in disposing of their output.

As regards action to alleviate the situation I would refer the Deputy to replies given by the Minister for Transport and Power to questions on this matter on 12th and 19th May indicating that the possibility of remedial measures was being actively investigated by him.

I have made attempts in that connection in the week that has passed to arrange for a deputation to the Minister for Transport and Power. I was informed that the Minister thought it would serve no useful purpose.

This is not a question. Surely the Deputy is not asking a question?

Yes. Would the Minister say to me that he has a right to refuse a deputation, in view of the anxiety of these people?

I think the Deputy should address that question to the Minister concerned. I expect no further stimulus is needed to the Minister's investigation.
