Vol. 215 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplementary Housing Grants.

12.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the rise in both monetary incomes and the cost of living, he will take immediate steps to raise the income limit of £832 per annum for qualification for the supplementary grant for housing.

The existing income limit of eligibility for supplementary new house grants is laid down by statute and would require new legislation to amend it. Apart from what has been published in the White Paper, I do not propose to make a statement on possible amendments of housing law in advance of the circulation of the new Housing Bill.

Surely the Minister is aware that the figure of £832 is now unrealistic and is debarring people to whom it was intended this Act would be of assistance in purchasing their own homes?

If the Minister has anything to say on the matter, he will will deal with it when he introduces the Housing Bill.

Surely the Minister is aware that this is causing considerable hardship and difficulty for people whom the Act was intended to help?

The Minister will deal with it.

Mr. Tully

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say when the new Housing Bill will be introduced?

It will be introduced in the next couple of weeks.
