Vol. 215 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fire Fighting Instruction.

53.

asked the Minister for Education if it is proposed to introduce instruction on fire fighting as a part of the curriculum in primary schools.

It is not proposed to introduce instruction on fire fighting as part of the curriculum in primary schools, but I have under consideration the question of issuing a circular to managers and principal teachers of these schools in relation to fire precautions including fire drill.

Would the Minister not agree that there have been quite a lot of fatalities among juveniles in recent years and would he not consider that the subject matter of the question is well worth considering in order to protect human life ?

The Deputy may have in mind the same thing as I have in mind in the reply but I do not think that "fire fighting" is an exact description of what the Deputy is suggesting.

Putting out fires is what I have in mind.

I have a short list of schools which could be burnt down for practice purposes.
