Vol. 216 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meeting of Cork Corporation.

10.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give details of the authority under which an official of his Department directed Cork Corporation in a letter dated 20th May, 1965, to proceed to arrange for the holding of an annual or quarterly meeting during the period from 23rd June to 1st July next on the basis that legislation to give statutory effect to the postponement of the 1965 local elections would be passed before these dates, whereas in fact no such legislation has yet been introduced.

Local authorities are required to hold annual or quarterly meetings between 23rd June and 1st July in any year in which local elections are not held. The letter referred to informed local authorities that proposals for legislation to postpone the local elections due to be held this year would shortly be submitted to the Oireachtas. I considered it desirable to give them this information so that preliminary arrangements could be made for the holding of the meetings referred to.

The Bill is being drafted and I hope to introduce it in the very near future.
