Vol. 216 No. 2

Committee on Finance. - Agricultural Credit Bill, 1965: Money Resolution.

I move:

That it is expedient to authorise such charges on and payments out of the Central Fund or the growing produce thereof and such payments out of moneys provided by the Oireachtas as are necessary to give effect to any Act of the present session to amend and extend the Agricultural Credit Acts, 1927 to 1961.

As indicated on the Second Reading, we in Fine Gael welcome the Bill in respect of which this Resolution has been moved but I think I should state here and now that in so far as we in this Party are concerned, we not only believe credit should be made available as extensively as possible for farmers and those desiring to work land but it should be made available, up to a certain limit, free of interest. To the extent to which this Bill continues an interest rate which in fact is not sufficiently low, we express disappointment even while supporting the Bill.

The interest rates applicable are much lower than would be available otherwise.
