Vol. 216 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Balance Sheets of Sugar Company and Erin Foods Limited.

24.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will arrange that the balance sheets of the Irish Sugar Company and Erin Foods Limited will be made available separately.

Under the provisions of the Sugar Manufacture Acts, 1933 and 1962, both the Irish Sugar Company and its subsidiary Erin Foods Limited are required to furnish their balance sheets to me annually for presentation to the Houses of the Oireachtas.

Can we get these balance sheets separately as requested in the question?

These balance sheets are presented annually for presentation to the Houses of the Oireachtas. The Deputy can segregate them if he wishes.

These accounts are all intermingled. We cannot separate the Erin Foods accounts from the Sugar Company's accounts. Therefore, we cannot pinpoint where the losses are sustained. I want the Minister to facilitate competitors of Erin Foods with regard to the publication separately of the balance sheets.

Under the recently passed Companies Act, the Irish Sugar Company, in common with other group companies, will have to submit not only group accounts but separate accounts as well.
