Vol. 216 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo-Leitrim Roads.

52.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will make special grants available for county roads both in Sligo and Leitrim as some of these roads are unsuitable and unsafe for lorries and tractors carrying milk, with consequent difficulty for local farmers.

The funds available for county road improvement in the current financial year have been fully allocated and there are no additional funds at my disposal from which further special grants for the purpose could be made. I would remind the Deputy that the allocations to Counties Sligo and Leitrim under the County Road Improvement Grant in the current financial year show an increase of 10 per cent over the allocations received by them in 1964-65. I would point out also that, in recognition of the extent of the county road problem in both counties, the County Road Improvement Grant allocations to them in recent years have been maintained at a high level, in contrast to other counties who have suffered reductions in the amounts of their County Road Improvement Grant allocations.
