Vol. 216 No. 8

Committee on Finance. - Shannon Free Airport Development Company Limited (Amendment) Bill, 1965: Committee and Final Stages.

Section 1 agreed to.
SECTION 2.
Question proposed: "That section 2 stand part of the Bill".

This is to increase the amount of money being spent on this project. Has the Minister any information in regard to the threatened American legislation to reduce from a gallon to a quart the quantity of spirits purchasable at Shannon Free Airport by American visitors?

There is some legislation with that in view. We made representations through our Ambassador in the United States and through the Ambassador here, giving information on the effect of such a provision, which will be very serious for the export of liquor from Shannon Airport. The legislation has not yet passed through both Houses in the United States. We have done our best in that regard and the American authorities are fully aware of the effects of a restriction on purchases by Americans at Shannon Airport.

As long as the Minister assures the House that every possible step has been taken at all vantage points, then I am satisfied.
