Vol. 216 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Dublin Telephone Kiosks.

44.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will arrange for the provision of a telephone kiosk at Golden Ball, Kilternan and another at Sandyford as requested by Dublin County Council.

The use likely to be made of kiosks at the places in question would not be sufficient to justify their provision.

In other words, people in fairly remote areas are not to be considered?

That is not so at all. The Deputy is drawing an inference from the reply which does not conform to the facts. It is not the case at all. The Deputy knows that telephone kiosks are provided for in the planned programme each year according to the amount of capital that is made available to the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs for that purpose and that it is the planned programme of the Department of Posts and Telegraphs to continue with the provision of kiosks in areas where they are most needed and where they will pay their way at the same time. There are villages that have not got telephone kiosks yet.

And they will never get them.

They will get them if they are warranted and this Government are providing the money and the Department of Posts and Telegraphs is putting in the equipment to provide them. If they were waiting for a Fine Gael Government to give the money, they would not give it. We know the amount of money they were prepared to give in 1956.

Ask the Minister for Finance how much is in the kitty now after today's carry-on.

Question No. 45.

Does the Minister not agree——

I have called Question No. 45.
