Vol. 217 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Pension Increase.

31.

asked the Minister for Justice whether Gardaí who retired previous to the recent granting of increases in the Garda pension will benefit from such increases; and, if so, to what extent.

Garda pensioners who retired before 1st November, 1961, that is before the 8th round pay increase, will have their pensions revised on the basis of the pay rates that came into operation on 1st March, 1960, the operative date of the 7th round, plus 14½ per cent. Pensioners who retired on or after 1st November, 1961, and before the 9th round came into operation on 1st February, 1964, will have their pensions revised on the basis of the 8th round pay rates plus 9 per cent. Any pensions that are already greater than they would be if they were so revised will not, however, be adjusted.

These increases are in line with the increases which are being granted to State pensioners generally and which were announced by the Minister for Finance in his Budget statement last May.
