Vol. 218 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Government Borrowing from Banks.

3.

asked the Minister for Finance the total of Government borrowing by all methods from commercial banks within the State at 1st September 1965 and at the same date in 1964.

The nearest dates to 1st September in each year for which this information is available are the 17th August, 1965, and 18th August, 1964. On these dates the amounts of Government securities held by the commercial banks were £50.57 million and £44.43 million respectively.

When the Minister speaks of the amount of Government securities held by the banks, does that include the banks' investments in Government Stock as distinguished from the actual borrowings of the Government from the joint stock banks?

There are two categories—the amounts of National Loans taken up by the banks as under-writers and Government stocks issued to banks to fund Exchequer bills.

Are there not borrowings by the Government from the joint stock banks as well?

There have recently been borrowings by funding loan but the figures I have given in reply to the original question are inclusive figures.
