Vol. 218 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Swimming and Life-Saving Courses for Teachers.

38.

asked the Minister for Education if he considers it desirable to provide facilities for the training of pupil teachers in training colleges in the arts of swimming and life-saving, with a view to enabling them to transmit their knowledge subsequently to their pupils; and, if so, what steps, including availing of the services of various voluntary organisations, he proposes taking towards that end.

I should welcome arrangements for the provision of instruction in swimming and life-saving for students in the training colleges and I intend to have the matter considered further in connection with a review of the programme of the training colleges which it is proposed to undertake at an early date.

Would the Minister consider whether it would be within the competence of his Department to give some assistance to voluntary bodies like the swimming associations to make these facilities available to the pupils of schools?

The question actually relates to the training of teachers but what the Deputy suggests would arise in general in connection with consideration of the teaching of swimming and life-saving.
