Vol. 218 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Parking Fines.

15.

asked the Minister for Justice the total amount of money collected to date by way of on-the-spot parking fines for (a) the whole country and (b) Dublin; and the total amount collected in Dublin during the latest 12 month period for which figures are available.

"Fines on the spot" are paid at local Garda stations and are later remitted to my Department. The available figures relate to the amounts remitted to the Department up to 31st October last. The amounts are as follows:

(a) total received since the inception of the scheme

£70,891

(b) total received from Dublin

£66,526

(c) total received from Dublin in the twelve months ended 31st October, 1965

£35,193

These figures have to be interpreted against the following background.

The scheme was introduced on 1st April, 1963, and for over two years applied only to the Garda Division known as the Dublin Metropolitan Division. On 1st May last it was extended to the cities of Cork, Limerick and Galway, and also to most of the expanded Garda Division known as the Dublin Metropolitan Area. This includes most of County Dublin and part of Wicklow, but the scheme was not extended to Bray until 1st October last.

The amount of the "fine" was increased from 10/- to £1 from 1st August, 1964.
