Vol. 218 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport of Beet.

42.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of the grave dissatisfaction that exists amongst beet growers in the Portarlington area in Laois-Offaly because their beet is now directed to Carlow instead of Tuam with consequent considerable delays; and if, in view of the fact that in some cases transport for beet arrives in the middle of the night and in other cases growers are told that their beet may not be taken until after Christmas, while it is allowed to reduce in quality by the roadside, he will take steps to consult with the Irish Sugar Company and the growers association as to the best method of dealing urgently with the disposal of the beet and of remedying the present state of affairs.

I am not aware that the position is as represented by the Deputy and, in particular, I have received no complaints from the Irish Sugar Beet Growers' Association. In the circumstances, I do not see the necessity for action as proposed by the Deputy.
