Vol. 218 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Posts in Cork Courthouse Offices.

44.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Justice how many permanent posts in offices in Cork Courthouse under the control of the County Registrar are vacant; for how long each of these permanent posts has been vacant; and what steps have been, or are being taken to fill these posts permanently.

Two posts of typists and one paper-keeper post are filled at present by temporary officers. The two typist posts have been filled in this way since September, 1963 and February, 1965, respectively. The paper-keeper post has been filled temporarily since June, 1964.

It is hoped to have one of the two typist posts filled permanently at an early date. The filling of the second post of typist and the paper-keeper post must wait the assignment to my Department by the Civil Service Commission of established officers.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of the three years ended 31st March, 1965 the total amount paid by way of salaries, allowances or expenses to persons occupying temporary posts in offices in Cork Courthouse under the control of the County Registrar.

Mr. Barrett

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state, in respect of a recently filled temporary post of typist in the Cork Circuit Court office, what public notice, if any, was given of the existence of the vacancy; how many persons applied for appointment to the post; how many of these applicants were widows and how many had previous employment; and if either of these factors was taken into consideration when the post was being filled.

Publication of the vacancy was affected by following the normal procedure of notifying it to the local employment exchange. Twelve persons applied for appointment. I am informed that none of the applicants was a widow. Nine of them had previous employment. All relevant considerations were taken into account in assessing the suitability of the applicants for appointment to the post.
