Vol. 218 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Scotch Whisky at Shannon.

5.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if, in view of the limited moneys available to the Irish whiskey distillers for advertising purposes in the United States and the tremendous cost of even limited advertising there, he will reconsider the suspension of the sale of Scotch whiskey at the Shannon duty-free shop.

As I informed the Deputy on 3rd November, I am not satisfied that suspension of the sale of Scotch whisky at the Shannon duty-free shop would benefit exports of Irish whiskey.

Would the Minister not think that people will always buy value and surely Scotch whisky being sold at the Shannon duty-free shop is of such value that it will be purchased? Secondly, we should couple "Buy Irish" with "Sell Irish".

Irish whiskey is sold in the Shannon duty-free shop and prominently displayed but nobody can be convinced that a person looking for Scotch whisky will take Irish at Shannon when Scotch can be purchased at other places.
