asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give priority to the arterial roads leading to the north-west when considering the five year programme for further improvement of these routes so as to give a further impetus to the tourist industry in this area and to make the area more accessible for industrial development.

In the formulation of the five year programme for the improvement of the arterial roads due regard will be paid to all relevant factors, including those mentioned by the Deputy.

asked the Minister for Local Government (a) if the Charlestown-Ballyhaunis road has been declared an arterial road, (b) what standards in regard to width etc. have been laid down for its construction and (c) what grant has been allocated for this road in the present financial year.

(a) This section of road has not, as yet, been declared an arterial road. (b) The design standards to be applied to improvement works on the road will be related to the present and projected traffic volumes thereon. (c) Mayo County Council's arterial road grant allocation for the current financial year is £15,000.
