Vol. 218 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Persons in Employment.

2.

asked the Taoiseach the total number of persons at work in April, 1951, and in April, 1964.

The total number of persons at work was 1,217,000 in April, 1951 and 1,059,000 in April, 1964.

May we take it that there are at present 158,000 fewer persons at work than there were in 1951?

The estimated total labour force and number of persons at work in the main branches of economic activity in April, 1951, and in 1953 to 1964 are shown on page 8 of "The Trend of Employment and Unemployment in 1964". In April, 1951, 721,000 were at work in non-agricultural economic activity and 496,000 in agriculture, forestry and fishing. The corresponding numbers in April, 1964, were 707,000 and 352,000 respectively.

Taking the figure for the whole country, is it not true to say that in April, 1964, there were 158,000 fewer people at work than there were in April, 1951?

A decline in the number of people employed in agriculture.
