Vol. 218 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Coast Fishery Limits.

48.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the continual flouting of fishery limits by foreign trawlers off the west coast; and what steps he proposes to take to deal with the situation.

My Department has not received any reports of illegal fishing by foreign trawlers off the west coast in recent months. Neither was any illegal fishing observed in the course of normal periodic patrols of the area by the Naval Service since March, 1965 when three convictions were obtained in respect of trawlers arrested and detained by a Naval Service patrol vessel.

The area in question along with other fishing areas along our coast will continue to be patrolled by the Naval Service within the limits of its resources.

Will the Minister indicate what is the extent of these services?

I have indicated in the House the extent of the services since becoming Minister for Defence.

Is it a fact that some of these corvettes are tied up in port, not capable of being put to sea?

The vessels are capable of being put to sea but there is not sufficient personnel available to man them.

Will the Minister indicate why there is not sufficient personnel available?

The Deputy might answer that himself. I am unable to say.

Is it because of the rate of pay?

We have increased the pay in the past few months.

By 5/- a week.
