Vol. 219 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rhodesian Declaration of Independence.

13.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if, arising out of the recent decision of Rhodesia to declare independence, he has considered what reactions this decision may have on trade between this country and Rhodesia; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy will be aware, the Security Council of the United Nations has had the question of Rhodesia under consideration since 12th November following on the declaration of independence on the previous day. The Security Council has adopted two resolutions on the subject the texts of which have been placed in the Dáil Library.

The precise effect of these resolutions in relation to our trade with Rhodesia is being studied.

As the Deputy is aware, our exports to that territory during the first eight months of this year were £8,901 and our imports, consisting principally of tobacco and asbestos, were £219,696.

A regulation under the Exchange Control Acts has been made designed to exclude Rhodesia from the list of scheduled territories which are not subject to our exchange control.
