Vol. 219 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Increase.

2.

asked the Taoiseach why the number of registered unemployed persons has increased by over 1,500 compared with the position two years ago.

The total number of persons on the live register as at 12th November, 1965, exceeded by 1,510 the total number of persons so registered on 16th November, 1963. The excess is a net figure and is the result of increases recorded at 67 local offices of the Department of Social welfare and decreases recorded at 51 local offices.

Identifying the causes of the changes which resulted in this increase would require a protracted investigation, the results of which would not be commensurate with the expense involved. It will however be possible to obtain a good deal of general information about the situation by comparing with the mid-November, 1963, figures the industrial analysis of the live register for mid-November, 1965, which the Central Statistics Office will publish early next month.

Amongst the causes which can be readily identified as being operative on the dates in question were short-time working at a large motor-assembly undertaking in Cork and the closing of Castlecomer Collieries.
