3.

asked the Taoiseach what has been the net increase or decrease in employment since January 1960 in (a) manufacturing industry, (b) all transportable goods industries, and (c) agriculture, forestry and fisheries.

Estimates of the total numbers of persons at work in various branches of economic activity are made in respect of the month of April of each year and the latest such estimates at present available are those for April 1964.

Between April 1960 and April 1964 it is estimated that the numbers at work in manufacturing industry increased by 24,000 and in transportable goods industries by 25,000 while, over the same period, the numbers at work in agriculture, forestry and fishing are estimated to have decreased by 38,000.

For more recent periods quarterly estimates are available of the numbers of persons engaged in concerns covered by the Census of Industrial Production. Between June 1964 and June 1965 it is estimated that the numbers of such persons in manufacturing industry increased by 1,600 and the same increase took place in respect of transportable goods industries.
