Vol. 219 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost of Houses.

20.

asked the Minister for Local Government the average cost of (a) houses for industrial workers, (b) houses for Gardai mentioned in the report of the National Building Agency for the year ended 31st March, 1964.

The building costs of houses provided by the National Building Agency, Ltd., in 1963-64, for occupation by industrial employees, varied with the requirements of the industry concerned in each case. Taking the typical house at 1,146 square feet with garage and central heating, or 1,016 square feet with garage, the average building costs were £3,212 and £2,418 respectively. Excluding the cost of garages at £200 each and of central heating at £400 a house, the average building costs per square foot were 45/5d. and 43/7d. respectively, for substructure, superstructure and all site-works within the curtilage of the house.

The average building cost of 367 houses provided for the Garda is £2,332. Excluding the cost of garages at £200 each, the average building cost per square foot for houses of 975 square feet is 44/- for substructure, superstructure and all site-work within the curtilage of the house.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary see anything peculiar about the prices?

They are all right——

Which of them?

——if we could only get enough of them.
