Vol. 219 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cahir Unemployment.

42.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the present position in Cahir due to the closing of Going and Smith's mill, he will make every endeavour to direct a suitable industry to Cahir, County Tipperary and help to alleviate the unemployment situation in the town.

The selection of a location for an industry is a matter, in the first instance, for the promoters of the industrial project and those investing their money in it. I have asked the Industrial Development Authority and An Foras Tionscal to see what they can do about getting a viable industry established in Cahir. I would be pleased to give all possible assistance to bring to fruition any sound industrial proposal for the area.

Is this mill still functioning as a compound feed factory?

So far as I know, it is. I should want to have notice of the question.

It is still operating and providing employment?

To some extent it is.

The Minister will remember that on the last occasion this matter was mentioned either he or his colleague, the Minister for Agriculture, said that the mill was not closed, that it was continuing as a compound feed factory.

The flour mill is closed down; the other part, I gather, is still in operation.
