Vol. 219 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water Supply Schemes.

93.

asked the Minister for Local Government if his Department received proposals from Listowel Urban District Council in connection with the proposed water extension to Clieveragh; and, if so, if and when the proposal is likely to be sanctioned.

A proposal to provide a pump house, duplicate pumps and a pressure vessel to boost the existing Clieveragh water supply was received in my Department on 4th November, 1965. Examination of this proposal has just been completed and sanction will issue shortly.

94.

asked the Minister for Local Government the date his Department received documents and plans from Listowel Urban District Council in connection with the long overdue improvement water scheme for the town; and if he will state the cause of the delay in giving the necessary approval.

General specification, plans and details of proposed water supply improvement scheme for Listowel were received in my Department on 28th September, 1965. These proposals are under examination.

95.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Local Government when the loan of £232,000 for Emly regional water scheme for which application was made on 15th June 1965 will be sanctioned, so that work may begin on this important productive project.

96.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Local Government when the loan of £407,000 for Dundrum regional water scheme for which application was made on 15th June, 1965 will be sanctioned, so that work may begin on this important productive project.

97.

(South Tipperary) asked the Minister for Local Government when the loan of £178,000 for Clonmel regional water scheme for which application was made on 11th August will be sanctioned, so that work may begin on this important productive project.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 95, 96 and 97 together.

Tipperary (SR) County Council's applications for loans for these schemes are under consideration. I am not in a position to say when sanction will issue.

98.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will explain the delay in providing a group water supply in the Old Leighlin area of County Carlow.

Delay was due mainly to difficulties experienced by the promoters in obtaining and guaging a suitable source of supply. This problem has been solved and I understand that the group have now engaged an engineer to design the scheme.

99.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will explain the delay in providing a group water supply in the Ballinabranna area of County Carlow.

A considerable amount of time was spent by the promoters in examining various sources before they obtained a suitable source of supply. I understand that the group are now engaging an engineer to design a scheme, based on the source eventually selected.

Is the Minister aware this scheme was mooted over 18 months ago and they are now going back to the original source that was first tested, but, in the meantime, 13 people who subscribed to the scheme have withdrawn because of the delay?

For those who never had water on tap 18 months is surely not a period that should really expend the patience of these 13 people. The fact that the original source is the one now finally settled on does not surprise me. I have known places where schemes have taken 20 years and, finally, they went back and started where they had been at the beginning.

There are places where it has taken only six months.

That is so, but one must take the long and the short together. These things cannot be done overnight.

Or over a year, or over a decade.

There was none being done a few years ago. What is the Deputy talking about?
